Song Demo
Delinquent... that's what I am and have been for close to two years!
Just haven't updated anything on the website in some time, for many
reasons. But finally, here I am, back at last. One of the comments
that has repeatedly come up is, "Yeah, great, but you wrote it thirty
years ago; have you gone dry?" Well no, but money has been an issue
these past few years and recording takes a little more than I have
available for discretionary spending. That being said, this is a live
recording of a song written this year! Yup, still churning them out.
This one is called "I'm Not In Love With The Girl Next Door." It was
written this past January, and I sequenced all the parts the same day.
Finally got around to recording it recently. No one particular person
or episode inspired the song, just a culmination of things, not the
least being that I hadn't written a waltz since 1967. So click on
I'm Not In Love With The Girl Next Door to download and listen.
As always, enjoy and feel free to send comments you may have.
Here's the Lyrics: Key of F if you're playing along!
I'm Not In Love With The Girl Next Door
Verse 1: Hung 'round each other from the day she was born
She wasn't quite two years younger than me
Grew up together on the far side of town
I'd annoy her and she'd bother me
Chorus: And I'm not in love with the girl next door
She was no more than a neighbor to me
No I'm not in love with the girl next door
But without too much effort I think I could be
Verse 2: I can't recall when we first heard 'em talk
That we were the couple that was meant to be
We both kept denyin' and just let 'em talk
We had our lives and adventures to see
- Repeat Chorus -
Verse 3: And so I came back to my hometown last year
Found a bar to relax and I stopped in for a drink
I couldn't believe she was there serving beer
Over many long nights, now I've had time to think
Chorus: I wasn't in love with the girl next door
She wasn't more than a good friend to me
Though I'm not in love with the girl next door
Without too much effort I think I could be
Ya know I think it will be

About the Song Demos
As I told you before, I was hoping by mid-2005 to release a new CD of
originals. The basic tracks are all laid down, but unfortunately economics
are holding up it's release. Until then and probably after, I'll place a demo
recording of one of my songs here about once every 2-3 months. My ISP
only allows me 20 mb of space which means I can only do one song at a
time, but hey, they're free!! Once again I'll reiterate that a demo recording
isn't as near perfectly produced as a final recording. The intended purpose
of a demo is to sell the tune to song publishers, who are only interested in
the raw song, not the artist or it's production values. As such, the vocals are
generally way out in front, with the music buried somewhere underneath in
the mix. I have over 40 years worth of recorded demos. As time allows I've
been converting my original demos from reel to reel tapes, 45 RPM records,
acetate recordings and cassettes to MP3's so you computer types can
download them and put 'em on you iPod (or not!!)
About my Songwriting "Career"
For many years I've teased that I do dance music for a living to support my
writing habit. I think mostly I say it to cover up the brutal honesty of the fact.
Writing songs is the one thing that really excites me and gets my blood
flowing. Unfortunately for me, I've never had the same passion about the
business aspect of writing that I demonstrate in my solo act. Being on stage
and performing is my livilihood, which makes me attack the business side of
music voraciously. On the other hand, songwriting is about the only thing I do
musically just for me. Truthfully, I totally lack the gene for self-promotion. To
go out and announce to the world, "Gee, ain't I wonderful" requires more ego than
I possess. I sort of figured that the music would take care of me if I played it
honestly, diligently and with conviction. To treat it as a business somehow takes
a large portion out of the pleasure I derive from it. That's not to say that I've
never submitted any songs. I'm published and have had a few semi-successful
forays as a tunesmith (read, collected some royalties). As Francis Ford Coppola
said in "The Godfather," "This is the business we have chosen." Sometimes
things go great, sometimes they don't. The best you can do is to weather both
successes and disappointments with equal grace. Hope you enjoy.
